HOW TO REORGANIZE AND PURGE KIDS TOYS

Updated: Oct 4, 2019

Do kids toys stress you out?? After the holiday's or birthday's the playroom just seems to get so cluttered!! If you are needing some motivation to purge some toys or rework your toy storage then keep reading.

Before you begin it is important to assess the space and think about the areas or the kinds of toys that your kids gravitate towards the most and determine if they are easily accessible. For example my daughter is super into babies so I knew that I wanted to switch things up and rework the area where all of her baby stuff was. Having a basic plan will help keep you focused and on track.

CLEAR IT ALL OUT:

The first thing when decluttering is to clear everything out! You need to know what you are working with in order to get to your end result. If your toys are not organized then it is best to pull it all out so you can start sorting. If the toys are already organized you could just pull down and go through a bin at a time.

PRO TIP:

Utilize picture labels so little ones can help with clean up.

GROUP BY LIKENESS:

When you are sorting through the toys it is best to group like things together so for example keep all stuffed animals together in one bin instead of in 3 different places throughout the room. The storage cube shelves are a great way to store toys as you can easily just put like items away in a bin and shut it and walk away.

REMOVE WHAT IS NOT BEING USED:

As you are sorting through each grouped section it is essential to determine what needs to be passed on or trashed. As yourself if your kid still plays with it and if it is still in good condition. If it is still in good condition but just not something your kid uses still then set it aside to donate or pass onto someone who will get more use out of it.

REWORK YOUR SYSTEMS:

If a system isn't working for your family anymore then rework it! For example my daughters dress up stuff was thrown into a bucket and it was really hard to find what she was looking for and it also turned into a miscellaneous bin so anytime someone didn't know where something belonged it normally ended up here.

So instead of continuing to work with this system that was not working and was stressing not only me out but my daughter as well because she could never find what she was looking for, I changed it! I ended up making sure all the clothes were hung up on the hooks we have in the playroom and then moved a little drawer unit over by the baby doll corner and put all of the extra dress up stuff along with all the baby things in their. It is so much easier for my daughter to find what she is looking for and now that everything has its own proper drawer it is easier to pick up at the end of the night.
